Acne and Alcohol: Cause or Cure?

Recently we had a question from a visitor to the site regarding acne and alcohol. They asked if it was ok to put alcohol on their spots to try to get rid of them. Here is some information about acne and alcohol:

Alcohol as a Cure for Acne

There is some merit to putting alcohol on acne blemishes. As it is an astringent it will shrink the pores on the skin and some people find that this helps their acne. However, for other people the pores shrink trapping oil, dirt and bacteria inside and making their blemishes worse.

In general applying alcohol to the skin is not a good idea as it strips away the skin’s natural oils leaving it dry and open to infection. Other topical acne treatments to consider instead would include benzoyl peroxide cream, tea tree oil, or the zeno acne device.

The Link Between Acne and Alcohol

For a long time it was thought that certain types of acne, particularly acne rosacea, were caused by excessive drinking. However, recent studies have proved this not to be the case.

While there is currently no proven link between acne and alcohol, it is known that excessive alcohol consumption can increase levels of hormones such as testosterone and estrogen in the body, which could have an impact on acne. Excessive drinking certainly won’t help acne, and may well aggravate it.
