Rhinophyma: The Distinctive Red Nose of Rosacea

One of the worst symptoms of acne rosacea is rhinophyma, a large red and bulbous nose. Rosacea usually affects more women than men, but this particular symptom is far more common among men.

The swollen nose rosacea can cause was once thought to be associated with drinking too much alcohol, but research has shown no link between drinking and the distinctive red nose of rosacea.

Symptoms of this severe form of acne rosacea include:

  • A bulbous shaped nose
  • A reddish appearance to the nose
  • Thickening skin around the nose
  • A waxy yellow surface to the nose
  • Many visible oil glands

Because rhinophyma can dramatically alter the appearance of your nose, rosacea can have an emotional impact as well as a physical one. Sufferers often lose confidence and become insecure or even depressed.

Although some acne medications have been known to work during the early stages of rhinophyma, the most effective solution is usually surgery to reshape the nose.
